April Fools – Tournament Style

The High School season was over but we were still playing basketball on April 1.  AAU was year-round at that point in our lives so the excessive inside gym time might have been the catalyst. We were at yet another tournament with hundreds of other young aspiring athletes.

There can be long wait times between each scheduled game. The girls leave for lunch or the mall. They multi-task by doing their homework or busy themselves with random girl talk or naps.  Tarah had the added challenge of putting up with her mother.

I had to find things to do too. I’d already been to college…and I had an array of April Fool’s pranks up my un-uniformed sleeve. When I realized Tarah and I were in the bathroom by ourselves, I told her my idea. She went for it.

We locked all the stalls from the inside.

As fast as we could!

When we left, yet another game was breaking up. Two teams of teenage girls were headed to the ladies room. Tarah and I looked at each other with “don’t laugh” grins on our faces. We stayed in the lobby outside the door to see what happened. We could hear the girls chattering and they seemed to just be “waiting their turn”. Another game finished and a line formed out the door.

We heard commotion inside and joined the end of the line. We asked what was going on as three girls stormed out.

“All the doors are locked and we can’t even use the rest room!”

Hearing this, others left the line to seek out another ladie’s room in the college facility. We got back into the bathroom  and realized the tournament coordinators were falling in behind us. The girls inside were upset. One slammed a stall door on her way out of it. The player at the sink explained to the college coaches:

“The doors were locked from the inside, coach.  Nobody was even in here.  We didn’t realize it at first…and we had to climb under!”

The athletic director tried to calm the girls as Tarah and I eased our way back out. We dared not say a word until we were in our car. I’ll never forget our fit of laughter.  I didn’t know if my daughter would ever play college basketball but she’d co-captained one hell of an April Fool’s prank!

Cup Captain – 100 Word Challenge

http://www.velvetverbosity.com/blog/2015/2/23/100-words-415-empty-your-cup

I first learned about the Cup when I finally thought to ask why my cousin had pink hair?

She is outgoing, committed to family and makes you die laughing every time you talk to her. She doesn’t need a dye job to stand out in our family.

Kathy’s  hair supports the Cure.  She hits the salon to “go pink” every year her Susan G. Komen team, The Cup Crusaders, hits the $100,000 fundraising mark.  Now I know she is an activist and empowers women. She believes in a world without breast cancer.

I want us to live in her world.

Choices

What do you do when you wake up early, after staying up way too late, and the dog needs to go out and it’s still the dead of winter?…

…and you want to go back to bed but you should first eat your breakfast to stay strong because you don’t otherwise exercise and when you do get your butt moving later in the day, you’re going to freeze your ass off for the 120th day in a row?..

…and you have plenty of paperwork from the office at home and more work in the house but no matter what you decide there won’t be enough hours in the day to do it all?…

Answer: Do what you do every day: multi-task.

Put on warm clothes, grab your breakfast and dig out a ‘frig for your o.j.

Start your snow treadmill and hike in over three feet of Massachusetts snow…

Lay down each time your heart rate is up and make a snow angel to rest.  The angel will point out you’re in the cold you dreaded, have exercised and your morning entry has written itself.

Everything you need is in your back yard.  He has supplied all of your needs.

There’s plenty of time for whatever else because your trust is in Him.

The Lord has provided another beautiful day.

Myra Stone just tried to kill me with a rock.

An old maid like my sisters and I but much older.   She was teaching us how to make bread by the fire.  We were confused by a grater out of place near the hearth.

It was that simple. That random.

Nobody wanted to own the grinding steel and how it got there.

We were in our colonial caps and Brunswicks looking at each other in wonder.  I noticed Myra for the first time in my moment of realization that it had been her all along.  Her cap was sinched tighter. Her skin was loose and a tooth was chipped. Her eyes were black, empty and cold despite the heat.

I didn’t  think she was a witch but now I knew she was evil. Sinister evil.  She’d not been suspected which was half the enjoyment for her. Her mob cap couldn’t fool me anymore.

She saw my terrified face when it hit me.  I knew why the grater was there.    I  also knew who’d been there with it.  I froze. It was me she was going to hurt next.  She reached toward the hot stones….

I was beyond terrified of this fellow so-called lady.  Our colonial home is haunted but this was a nightmare. I    was scared and now it was to death.

When I awoke, our fire in the wood stove had gone out. I could feel the raw of winter but was sweating profusely. I’d fallen asleep in my sweats. I was scared, my heart was racing and I was literally having cold sweats in my cold sweats.

I worried Myra was right there next to me and was scared shitless.  It was the wee hours of the morning and too still.  I looked into the darkness of the room, praying I didn’t see her image. I needed her gone.

I offed her the best way I knew how.  I did. I killed her.

I pulled out a piece of paper and wrote her out of my mind.
